In any organization or community, the “keystone” is considered one of the most vital parts. In any type of ecosystem, a keystone species is an organism that helps hold the system together. Some ecosystems might not be able to adapt to environmental changes if their keystone species disappeared.
The best example of this is the honey bee. Honeybees are responsible for a large majority of plant pollination. Without bees to pollinate these plants, not only will plant species die off but so will the animals that rely on those plants as their main food source. Additionally, this will affect secondary consumers who rely on those animals as a primary food source. This domino effect continues throughout the food chain and eventually will destroy the ecosystem entirely.
